Albalact sees 30% higher turnover in Q1

Albalact Alba Iulia (ALBZ), Romania's biggest dairy producerlisted on the Bourse, saw turnover rise by more than 30% in thefirst quarter from a year ago, from 64.4m lei (15.5m euros) to85.2m lei (20.6m euros).

"We had a major increase, especially against the market context,we boosted turnover by 32% compared with the first quarter of 2010.The increase is generated by volumes, as well as value. We can seethe results of the things we have been preparing since last year interms of logistics, sales and marketing," says Raul Ciurtin, 39,Albalact's chairman and general manager.

However, in the first three months of this year the incomederived by Albalact, a company controlled by Ciurtin family, shrankby 43% in lei from 4.6m lei (1.1m euros) to 2.6m lei (0.6m euros).

The profit decline comes after 2010 income decreased by 75% from2009 as a result of the company's strategy targeting a wideningmarket share, so that the transport capacity was boosted by 50% inthe wake of a 2.5m-euro investment.

"Profit was hurt in the third and fourth quarters of 2010, wemade the decision to keep growth plans, even though we sacrificedprofit and this is what we still want".
