Eco-Rom spearheads new recycling system

01.07.2004, 00:00 8

The major bottlers of drinks on the Romanian market, as well as packaging producers, have worked out a waste collection system handled by a specialised company. Eco-Rom Ambalaje SA picks up what has been collected at the used packaging collection centres and sells it to the packaging producers through the "Green Point" system. The name comes from a symbol, a green disc of about one centimetre in diameter, which is put on plastic and cardboard packaging. The presence of the symbol means that part of the product's price goes to an organisation (Eco Rom, in Romania's case) that collects the used packaging. If part of the price were not directed to such a company, then no one would collect the packaging for recycling since it is not a profitable business. Eco Rom's founders are Romanian and foreign companies that manufacture a wide range of packaging products or make and sell consumer goods packaged in Romania. The founders are as follows: Argus SA, Ball Packaging Europe, Brau Union Romania SA, Coca-Cola HBC Romania SRL, Munplast SA, Quadrant Amroq Beverages SA. Tetra Pak Romania SRL and Unilever South Central Europe joined the others in March. ZF
