PNL wants non-aggression pact

31.08.2000, 00:00 12

The Liberals yesterday suggested to their partners in the ruling coalition to conclude a non-aggression protocol for the electoral campaign. PNL prime vice-president Valeriu Stoica grounded the suggestion on the fact that, over this period, the parties in the present coalition have to carry on the process of reform and Euro-Atlantic integration. He also mentioned the "recent attacks" aimed at PNL (Liberal Party) by "some governing parties."

The protocol draft, released by PNL yesterday, binds the coalition parties "to refrain from those electorally-flavoured statements and manifestations that may harm the governmental activity necessary for completing reform and carrying on the process of European integration."

At the same time, according to the protocol, the parties in the coalition pledge to "honestly" continue their collaboration within Government and Parliament, based on the existing agreement and understandings, "assuming the electoral competition in a civilised manner."

The parties in the ruling coalition agree, in the draft submitted by PNL, on the fact that the attacks aimed at individuals, as well as those concerning the private life and the affiliation to a minority group "are a mean way to carry on the electoral campaign" and state that they will refrain from this kind of actions.

PNL also suggested to its coalition partners that parties resorting to "extremist and intolerant manifestations" should be isolated, both during the electoral campaign and after the elections.

PNL suggested that a meeting should be organised between the coalition leaders on Thursday, September 7, in order to tackle the text of the protocol. According to sources within the National Management Office, the Christian-Democrats theoretically agreed to the conclusion of a non-aggression pact.
