Printer prices set to rise

14.06.2005, 21:10 5

Representatives of Romanian artists (writers, filmmakers, musicians, painters etc.) could be responsible for a sudden surge in prices for multiplication hardware - photocopiers, scanners, printers, CD writers etc.- if a draft law devised at the request of the Romanian Copyright Office and the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs is endorsed by emergency ordinance. "The emergency ordinance could be adopted in no more than two weeks'' time," Valentin Negoita, APTEDIC chairman, told Ziarul Financiar. APTEDIC represents nearly 40 IT companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Flamingo, Tornado, and K Tech - Ultra Pro. Prices could rise by 15-20%, say representatives of the importers and distributors of IT equipment. The draft law stipulates the elimination of the minimum and maximum limits for the so-called "private copy tax" - the amount included in the sales price of multiplication devices, which is due to the creators of works or art by law.
