Vrancea's misfortune, Tohani's profit

09.10.2003, 00:00 5

Known as the earthquake epicentre, the Vrancea area has also become known as the wine epicentre. Whenever there is an "earthquake" in the area, the entire market stands to lose. Or gain. Virgil Mandru, chairman of Prahova-based Tohani, says the hard winter that impacted on the crops in Vrancea should result in a rise in the price of wine, benefiting producers in the unaffected areas. Tohani, the vineyards of which take up more 1,300 ha, estimates to sell 4 million euros' worth this year, 14% more than in 2002. "We've had neither a very good nor a very bad year," Mandru said. "The crop was not that large, as last winter was very cold, and temperatures in May reached 40 degrees Celsius, which impacted on the grapes," Mandru added. Tohani's yield amounts to 10 million kilos in a good year. The yield was of 6 million kilos this year and was as low as 2 million kilos in 2002, due to the drought. "With all the drought in 2002 we still managed to deposit 1 million litres," Mandru said. The company makes various wines, such as Feteasca Alba, Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot or Pinot Noir. Fifty percent of the output is exported to Germany with the rest sold on the domestic hotel, restaurant and catering market and deposited in the wine cellar. ZF
