23.05.2005, 19:14 12

Mihai Dumitriu, the chairman of the Ovine Farmers and Exporters Association of Romania, along with two Greek meat wholesalers will build one of the biggest mutton slaughterhouses in Romania in Vernesti, Buzau County. The investment announced amounts to 3.3 million euros and the slaughterhouse will have a 300-head/hour capacity. a??There are very few sheep slaughterhouses in Romania, and the investments (in that direction) will follow an upward trend in the next few years. Two new slaughterhouses will open next year, one in Timisoara by an Italian investor and one in Brasov by a Russian investor,a?? Dumitriu says. He added the investment in slaughterhouses was necessary because Romaniaa??s exports of mutton, worth 120 million euros in 2004, which corresponds to 2.4 million head, are very cheap compared to those of Hungary and Greece.
