With the disappearance of some major industrial centres thatwere turned into real estate businesses, as it happened with manyBrasov companies, for instance, the only big card Romania can stillbet on is the one of energy, believes Mihai David, general managerof Hidroelectrica, a man who is now playing a key role in therestructuring of the energy system.
"The only thing still standing we've got is the energy system.In Brasov, for instance, which used to be the second economiccentre of the country, there is nothing left. What should we relyon for growth? On the IT? It's out of the question," believes MihaiDavid.
Currently, David is handling the setting up of one of the twoenergy giants, Hidroenergetica, through which Romanian authoritiesare trying to reorganise the country's generation system.
While the idea of regrouping all the large production facilitiesof Romania is facing a wave of criticism, especially from the majorinternational energy giants that came here through privatisationprocesses, David believes there are several interests behindthis.
