Good harvest of 2006 cuts wine imports in the first four months

01.08.2007, 19:01 5

Wine imports fell by 32% in the first four months of this year, to 5.35m euros, compared with 7.91m euros against the same period last year, according to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture. The decrease was greater in terms of quantity, by around 56% and reached almost 8,000 tonnes, according to the same source. Wine imports last year reached 22.1m euros. Falling imports are a surprise for the market given that the elimination of customs duties, which was expected to bring a similar increase as last year's, of around 200%. The explanation is related to the good harvest in 2006, which allowed domestic producers to give up bulk wine imports that covered domestic market demand. The second half usually brings bigger sales than the first, which could also generate slight increases for imported wines.
