The Romanian Government has paid around 1 billion and a half RON (400 million euros) of the 2008 overdue debt of the Ministry of Transport, according to official data from the ministry. The bulk - 1.3 billion (350 million euros) has been paid by the Ministry's National Roads Company to companies involved in the main infrastructure projects in Romania. Bechtel, which is building the Transilvania motorway (photo), has collected over 250 million RON from the Government, which is part of the debt accumulated in 2008. Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc (PD-L - Democratic-Liberal Party) has repeatedly accused the former liberal government led by Calin Popescu Tariceanu of having left behind debt worth over one billion euros, but the former head of the Cabinet denied the accusations. The head of Government announced last week that 93-94% of the debt had been paid up. The Ministry of Transport therefore accounts for a major slice of this debt, with the largest amounts being collected by foreign players, among which US's Bechtel, Italy's Pizzarotti, France's Colas, Greece's Mochlos, Germany's Geiger and Israel's Ashroich. The Government also paid overdue sums worth - over 50 million RON (12 million euros) to land owners whose land was expropriated in view of building motorways.
