As a result of both intensive and extensive streamlining operations this year, RomTelecom, the largest fixed telephony operator on the market, and BCR, the largest bank in the system, will cease being companies that employ over 10,000 people, with 2,500 and 2,400 employees to be made redundant at the two companies. Romtelecom's number of employees has constantly been going down over the last few years, from 45,000 employees in 1999 to 12,500 at present. BCR will end the year with 8,200 jobs, compared with 10,600 at the end of last year. ArcelorMittal Galati has also continued with a series of voluntary redundancies, and is set to part with approximately 1,000 employees this year. Between them, Romtelecom, BCR and ArcelorMIttal Galati will end the year with 6,000 fewer employees. The major private employers with more than 10,000 employees are formerly state-owned companies. The layoffs came with privatisation, which almost implicitly entails streamlining and redundancies. The 13 companies with over 10,000 staff in Romania have 200,000 employees Half of these people, approximately 100,000, work for the six state-held companies, and the rest for private companies.
