RWE enters energy market through trading company

19.09.2007, 18:18 6

RWE Trading, the electricity supply unit of Germany's RWE group, will enter the domestic market next year by setting up a trading firm, after the company started looking at the domestic market as early as 2001. Although RWE's priority on the domestic market is generating electricity, the group's first definite step in Romania will be the creation of the trading company. According to information available on the website of the Romanian energy ruling authority (ANRE), 66 active supply companies were registered at the end of 2006. At the same time, the group's representatives stated they would file a binding bid for reactors 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Station. So far, 23 companies have acquired the necessary documentation to put together binding bids for the project involving the two reactors. The development strategies of all the foreign investors present on the Romanian energy market are currently hindered by uncertainty related to the Government's decision on the setting up of an energy giant. RWE was interested in the privatisation of Electrica Muntenia Sud, but lost out on the opportunity to enter the domestic market to Italy's Enel.
