Praktiker, the German network of home improvement stores has sped up its development on the local market, and is to open five stores this year. The company had announced at the beginning of the year that it had raised its expansion target on the Romanian market from 15 to 20 stores. According to the general manager of Praktiker Romania, Guenter Vosskaemper, 2006 is becoming the most dynamic year since the German group entered the Romanian market. "We have set out to expand to all the big cities in the country by 2008," said Vosskaemper. Praktiker will invest 40 million euros in the five stores to be opened this year in Targu-Mures, Galati, Braila, Bucharest and Satu Mare, to reach a total sales area of over 100,000 square metres by the end of the year. Praktiker opened its first store on the local market in the autumn of 2002, near Metro Cash & Carry in Voluntari. Since then, the home improvement division, Praktiker, has opened three outlets per year. Last year was the exception, when the Germans opened four stores, the most prolific year so far.
