Remes stays at the Finance Ministry

01.09.2000, 00:00 12

On Tuesday evening, PNL (Liberal Party) leadership withdrew political support granted to Finance minister Traian Decebal Remes. However, PNL prime-vice-president Valeriu Stoica on Wednesday told a press conference that the Liberals were not suggesting Mugur Isarescu to replace Remes, as they did not wish to spark a governmental crisis and deprive the PM of a "prop" during negotiations with the IMF.

According to Stoica, PNL is not planning to claim the seat of Finance minister for the time being. "The algorithm should not be changed into an absurd rule," the Liberal leader stated, adding that PNL adopted the same attitude in Babiuc case, when the party was in favour of the minister's keeping his position after having resigned from PD (Democrat Party).

Stoica deemed as "strange" the fact that Premier Isarescu understood that PNL was suggesting him to replace Remes, as shown by the letter addressed to Mircea Ionescu-Quintus.
