Comtim chokes on Polish imports

16.02.2004, 00:00 9

Comtim Grup SA, a company that took over about one fifth of the assets of the former swine breeding company in Timisoara, Comtim, logged 14.5 million-euro turnover last year, merely 3% more than in 2002. The reasons for this turnover stagnation are the massive imports of pork primarily from Poland, but also the double fodder prices, which account for 80% of the production cost per kilo of pork, as explained by Mircea Stoita, Comtim Grup general manager. "Still, we had significant output growth last year," Stoita said. The 15,000 tonnes of pork (about 150,000 swine slaughtered) output enabled Comtim to account for some 7%-8% of Romania's total pork production last year, which makes it the leading producer. Unofficial estimates show the pork market amounted to some 300,000 tonnes last year, with imports reaching 80,000 tonnes in the first ten months and worth 71 million euros. The market of pork producers is highly fragmented and Comtim's main competitors are Romsuintest Peris, Caruz Braila and Nutricom Oltenita, each of which totals up to 100,000 swine. ZF
