Cramele Recas earmarks 2m euros for expansion

18.01.2006, 20:30 14

The representatives of wine producer Cramele Recas, of Timis county, have announced investments standing at around 2 million euros for this year, to be directed towards technological flow modernisation and the establishment of a new 65-hectare plantation. Last year, the Timisoara-based producer invested more than 500,000 euros in the planting of certain noble grape varieties for Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

In the wake of these investments, the company''s management forecasts turnover for this year worth more than 8 million euros, accounting for a 20% increase on last year. In 2005, turnover saw growth of over 40% in comparison to 2004.

Cramele Recas exports 60% of its annual output of around 5 million litres of wine, and this year the company plans to boost deliveries onto the domestic market.

"For the future, we want to improve our presence on the domestic market to sell around 50% of our production here. For the time being, though, the domestic market is not mature enough, both in terms of traders and of consumers. The evolution of the market will be sped up over the following period especially owing to competition from imports, which will lead to a selection process taking place among distributors and higher consumption," Gheorghe Iova, technical manager with Cramele Recas, told ZF Transilvania. In order to seize a larger share of the domestic market, the wine producer is preparing to launch a new range of drinks adjusted to the tastes of domestic consumers.

"Our portfolio is based around the tastes of Western consumers, with a focus on dry wines. Even though the tastes of domestic consumers will develop toward the same preferences, we do not want to overlook the current consumer profile. This is why we will launch a range of semi-sweet wines and will add some semi-dry wines to our portfolio," Iova also said.

The policy Cramele Recas devised for this year includes closer collaboration with regional distributors for the promotion of indirect sales.

Cramele Recas, a Romanian-British firm, was set up in 1998 and in 1999 leased an area of 668 hectares of vineyard from the State Properties Agency. It currently has 150 employees, with this number fluctuating due to the seasonal nature of the work.
