New biscuit factory to sweeten up depressed area

18.05.2001, 00:00 9

atei, Bihor County, is a depressed area where preparations for the opening of a new biscuit factory are almost over. This is where Hay 2000 Company, part of the Alka Concern, will start making some 200 tonnes of biscuits per month, effective early in June, with the production scheduled to reach 500 tonnes per month at some point in time.

The building of the factory and the necessary equipment entailed a $2.8 million investment from the company. Alka is also preparing another investment, worth DM15 million, in a factory located in a depressed area, as well, in Prahova County.

The construction of the atei-based biscuit factory started in late February, then the equipment and machinery were shipped in, with the last tests being conducted at the moment.

"At first, we will make biscuits of three types of quality and chocolate pretzels, a new specialty for the consumers in Romania.

The initial monthly output will reach 200 tonnes, but we're planning to gradually reach a 500 tonnes/month production," said Heinerich Krenzia, Alka chairman and also a Romanian-born who left the country some 50 years ago.

The company's business plan has scheduled DM10 million for the investment in atei, declared a depressed area back in 1999, which money will be gradually invested into increasing output and diversifying the product range.

"We are planning to open another factory dealing in food industry next year. We will build it in a depressed area, too, in Filipestii de Padure, Prahova County, to be precise.

This investment will amount to some 15 million DM, but we have teamed up with a German concern for the project," Heinerich Krenzia said, without volunteering the name of the partner. Moreover, the company is set on expanding the productive capacity of the factory it already has in Bucharest.

In its six years in business on the Romanian market, Alka has invested some $12 million. It currently has more than 60 foodstuffs on the market, including the Mocca coffee, the Alka Wafers and the Nutline assortment (peanuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, pistachio nuts and almonds). All of them made in Bucharest-based factory with imported "content."

Alka's overall business plan schedules an over $10 million annual investment pace for this year and for the next one. As for the money to be spent next year, the installations in Filipestii de Padure alone need more than 6 million DM, Alka chairman told Ziarul Financiar.

Furthermore, the number of jobs will practically double from 300 to 600 in one year, in case the investments go according to the schedule.
