Orange: Growth undermined by roaming and interconnection

09.05.2008, 20:32 9

The revenues of Orange Romania, the largest mobile phone operator on the local market, went up by 8.4% in the first quarter of the year and reached 307 million euros, supported by the increase in the client base by 21%, to over ten million users, reads the financial report of the French group France Telecom, Orange's majority shareholder. It is the first time in the last few years that Orange Romania reports a revenue increase of less than 10%. The revenue growth rate in Q1 of 2008 is almost three times lower than the 2007 rate, of 24.3%. Richard Moat, CEO of Orange, says the slowdown in the growth rate mainly has to do with the reduction of interconnection fees and roaming fees, imposed by the arbiter of the Romanian telecom market in Romania, the European Union. "The 8.4% revenue growth rate is a consequence of the reduction in termination rates (i.e. interconnection rates) charged between mobile networks. It also has to do with the EU regulations on reducing roaming fees. If we eliminate these revenue fluctuations imposed by the regulatory authorities, what we have is a 19% organic growth in Orange Romania revenues in the first quarter of 2008, compared with the first quarter of the preceding year," Richard Moat told ZF.
