Ursus: Beer consumption could reach 115 litres per capita in 5 years

Stephan Maria Weber, president and CEO of Ursus Breweries, the brewer with the highest turnover on the Romanian market, says PET-bottled beer sales will stagnate after this segment reaches 50% of the overall market, from a current 47%. According to estimates made by the Ursus Breweries representative, the PET-bottled beer segment will add 3% to its market share by the end of 2010. "After they reach their 50% maximum potential, PET-bottled beer sales will stagnate, especially those of 2-litre bottles. PET containers will not disappear from the market, but they will begin to diversify, with one-litre and half-a-litre bottles to be used more," said Stephan Maria Weber. According to Ursus Breweries representatives, the beer market has seen a rise for aluminium beer can sales, with the main growth trends being recorded on the mainstream segment and on the beer variety segments. "Annual beer consumption per capita has tripled over the last ten years. We don't expect this to be repeated in the next ten years, but beer consumption will continue to grow by 3-4% a year, and reach as much as 110-115 litres per capita within the next five years," explained Weber.
